How a Polychroma print is made.

Every map goes through four steps: collect streets, clean the data, add water, colour the polygons. We write the software for it entirely ourselves, no off-the-shelf tool, no template.

  1. 01

    Collecting street data

    OpenStreetMap data via the Overpass API. The region's street network is extracted.

  2. 02

    Cleaning the data

    Dead ends and unconnected loose ends are removed algorithmically.

  3. 03

    Adding water detail

    Rivers, lakes and other water bodies are extracted and merged with the street data.

  4. 04

    Colouring the polygons

    The network is subtracted from the land mass. The resulting polygons become the artwork, coloured from a fixed eight-colour palette.
